Sr Data Architect

Toronto/Waterloo, ON

We're looking for an experienced and highly analytical leader to join our client's Enterprise Data Platform team as a Senior Data Architect. Reporting to the Capability Lead – Data Architecture, you will play a key role in shaping and governing our data platform architecture, specifically within the Databricks environment. 

This is a permanent, full-time, remote-first hybrid role (ie no strict cadence for on-site, just when needed) for candidates located in or near either Toronto, or Kitchener/Waterloo

Responsibilities:

  • Architect and implement data platforms, encompassing database design, data structures, storage solutions, access protocols, data loading processes, and pipeline development.
  • Partner with data stewards and data engineers on solution design and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain physical data models for the Databricks platform.
  • Manage metadata within data cataloging tools (e.g., Collibra).
  • Champion data curation standards and guidelines, ensuring alignment with the medallion certification framework and established architecture.
  • Guarantee platform and design compliance with security and privacy regulations, including PII management.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to data curation, ingestion, and engineering teams, including code and data model design reviews, promoting adherence to standards and best practices.

Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of experience in data engineering, data modeling, and ETL/ELT development.
  • Prior experience as a senior engineer, including conducting code reviews.
  • Hands-on experience with at least six of the following:
    • Logical and physical data model design and implementation
    • Data modeling tools (e.g., Erwin, ER/Studio)
    • Databricks/Spark
    • Lakehouse architecture and medallion data organization
    • ETL/ELT development, monitoring, pipelining, and orchestration
    • Python/PySpark, Scala, or similar programming language
    • Data quality guidelines and testing frameworks
    • Technical design document and data flow diagram creation
    • CI/CD pipelines
    • Agile methodologies
    • Git and version control
